Top Ten Helpful Hints for a Successful Year for Au Pairs
10. ADMIT IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.
Let your host family know if the language is a problem. Admit if you do not understand a word or directions. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Relax- your English will improve rapidly during your first few weeks. After you become accustomed to the family’s routine, you will find that the number of questions will decline. Your English will improve also if you make it a habit to speak English even with other Au Pairs.
9. SHOWER OR BATHE REGULARLY.
Most Americans value cleanliness as a virtue. Families expect that their Au Pairs will bath or shower regularly and change into clean clothes daily. People in US shower like crazy. Hot days you may need to use deodorant multiple times a day.
Don’t forget deodorant! We also have awesome shower gels, powders, creams that smell great. Americans want to smell good.
BE A GOOD EXAMPLE.
The children you care for look up to you. They are very impressionable and model what they see and hear from the adults around them. Do not do things in front of the children that their parents would not want them to do. Do not discuss social life when hanging out with other AU pairs in front of kids.
7. BE CONSIDERATE OF YOUR HOST PARENTS.
Keep them informed of where you are going. If you are planning on traveling, discuss the details with them and make sure your plans do not interfere with their schedules.
6. FOLLOW HOUSE RULES.
The only way you will establish trust is by following rules-even those that you might not agree with.
5. NEGOTIATE FOR CHANGE.
If you have a problem, present it to your host parents clearly and calmly. Suggest your solution to the situation. Listen to what they say. Try to reach a compromise. Communicate for success
4. DO NOT COMPARE.
Every situation and family is different. Do not compare other Au Pairs’ situations with your experience. Gossiping about other Au Pairs and their families may be harmful.
3. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS.
No one is perfect. If you make a mistake, take responsibility and try to correct the situation.
2. BE A GOOD “BUDDY.”
Remember what it is like to be a new Au Pair. Welcome new arrivals. If you are asked to be a buddy, arrange to meet the new Au Pair and bring him/her to the next meeting.
